Ah, freedom. There’s nothing like it.
It’s a loaded word, I know. My American friends are celebrating their country’s freedom and independence this week (you probably already get how big the 4th of July is), yet for so many it’s a daily struggle to feel any sense of freedom.
It got me thinking about freedom and what it means to feel free. For me it’s that feeling of spaciousness I get when I'm floating in the sea. Thanks to my Aussie roots and summers spent at the beach, it’s a profoundly inspiring memory and I can literally smell the ocean when I recall it. And don’t get me started about the sweet coconutty smell of sunscreen. It’ll forever be one of my favorite smells.
What does freedom mean to you?
For some of us it's about being free of stuff, the act of decluttering your wardrobe or your house can bring intense feelings of spaciousness as you let go of things. For some of us it’s that feeling of being on vacation and free of work for a while when we take a summer break.
Maybe for some it’s about working hard to let go of a bad habit that’s got a tight grip, and finally being free of its control.
Maybe it’s about being free of a friendship or a relationship that doesn’t feel good anymore.
And maybe it’s finally being free of your old life story.
You see, coming out of a divorce is like that. It can be a time of a shedding of stuff.
Not only material stuff , but the deep held emotions and beliefs of our head and heart that have been holding you back.
It’s about finding a new sense of freedom in discovering what you truly want in your life and what's important to you.
And in those moments of discovery, finally seeing what's possible for your new life.
The freedom to let go of an outdated version of yourself. To learn, heal, grow and build out the skills you need to create a new, better life.
And the place to start is with honoring yourself.
Taking care of yourself, loving yourself and being present with yourself is the first step on the path to finding a new sense of freedom.
It’s possible. And I want that for you.
